Lafayette, like a lot of other towns in the Boulder area got its start in the coal mining days. Back in 1889, it was founded by Mary Miller. Mrs. Miller was the wife of Lafayette Miller and she named the town after her late husband. One day she discovered the largest coal mine in the area beneath her property. As a result of that, her wealth increased and so did her influence in the area. She helped get her son elected as mayor and then ran the town from behind the scenes. She was a very interesting individual and her influence rubbed off on the rest of the small mining village. Over the years, the town grew and eventually turned out to be the wonderful place that it is today.
